To survive the hurdles that Mother Nature continues to throw at man, he has created numerous ways which he uses to circumvent these problems that come with living. Sustenance mostly in the form of food is required by every living being to stay alive. Foods contain important elements known as nutrients that are used to sustain the internal workings of the body. Without food, an organism will experience a certain unpleasing natural urge to eat known as hunger. Organisms suppress this urge by taking in substances from their environment which contain useful nutrients for their body. Humans derive their food from two major sources which could be either from animals or from plants.
These food items don’t just come to us easily, at times we need to acquire food actively by ourselves. Before the onset of our modern world where the majority of human population derive their food from trading with a legal tender, there were two major ways humans used to source food. These include; hunting and farming. Farming is any process that involves planting specific crops that will benefit man as food or for other uses. Rearing of domestic creatures for their meat, milk, or any other product that is useful to man can also be described as farming. While hunting is any process that involves the killing of wild animals to use their meat.
The people that carry out this action which some times is done as a type of occupation are called hunters. This particular activity is as ancient as man’s history itself and several civilizations exist or existed that survive mainly through the act of hunting. The process of killing creatures can be pictured by some as gruesome since it involves the ending of another being’s life. Should hunters be viewed as villains for “selfishly” taking the life of another since if the tables were turned and the hunter becomes the hunted, it will not paint a pretty picture?
We are emotional beings, it is okay to feel this way but we should understand hunting is a natural phenomenon of life. Even forest dwellers hunt to stay alive, we are all in the great battle for survival. The plants take from the soil, the grazers take from the plant, the claw bearers take from the plant-feeders, and we take from all. It is a circle of life which is pyramidic in structure and we are lucky to be at the top of this pyramid. Scientists have proven that other creatures feel pain just as we do, so killing animals is not a fun sport because you are hurting a living being. Many hunters know this fact, and professional hunters try to make the death of the animals as clean as possible. In that, the prey of the hunt will not feel any pain.
Killing of beasts for food can’t be considered as bad since it’s an action done to ensure survival. Plus there are worse deaths that befall animals than dying from a hunt. Ethical hunting is morally right action, a hunter doesn’t necessarily need to feel bad because he carried out a kill.
