Man has always sought to understand his environment better. To achieve this task he has constantly invented unique creative ways that he uses to define his world and in turn understand it better. Understanding how the world works is crucial, it allows us to carry out intelligent actions and make wise decisions. Unlike other animals, this self-termed higher animal manipulates its environment to adapt to it rather than adapting to the environment. Humans have invented numerous ways that we can use to manipulate the surroundings to suit what we want, a typical example of these ways is a process called measurement.

Measurement involves any process that allows us to determine the numerical value of a quantity of a matter in a specific unit. The fundamental of physics plus engineering is sourced from being able to carry out simple and complex measurements using man-made measuring devices. Apart from its academic and professional uses, measurement is quite useful in our daily activities. From cooking to buying the perfect size of shoe or even knowing how fast your child is increasing in height. Arguably, the most commonly measured quantity of matter is Length. Length depicts how long or short an entity is, it interprets a 1-dimensional space a matter occupies.

When measuring a two-dimensional space an entity occupies it is termed Area. Which can be mathematically obtained by multiplying the two lengths of an entity together and also multiplying them with an integer depending on its shape. Length can be yet again called width, breadth, or height to differentiate its sides measured. Volume is what is being measured when the 3 dimensions of an entity are to be considered. The SI unit of volume is a cubic meter, cubic inches, or liter for liquids. To measure the volume of a box which is usually in a cube/cuboid shape, the length, breadth, and height need to be measured using measuring devices.

For a near accurate result without any use of complex measuring devices, you can make use of a thread and a meter rule to carry out this measurement. You first align this thread with its sides after extending the thread to its length’s limit then you measure this thread with a meter rule. When the numerical value of the sides of your box has been determined, these values are multiplied together to give you the volume of your box. The accuracy of this result is highly dependent on the accuracy of your initial gauged value. This measures the sides of your box which is the most important part of the exercise.

The accuracy of your result can be improved by using a more accurate gauging tool to carry out the boxes’ measurement. Another tool you can use is the measuring tape which is a signature device for tailors. With the use of the right tools to measure and simple application of multiplication, the cubic meters of any box can be determined no matter how big/small the box is. However, it should be of note that the size of a box determines which scaling device is suitable for it.
